Knight Foundation

Knight News Challenge accepting proposals!

It's time for another round of the annual Knight News Challenge, a competition for the best ideas regarding news, journalism, and the digital distribution of information. We know the great people at the Knight Foundation well, having received a previous Knight grant for our Mobile Information Project (MIP) which is currently in operation in Chile. In addition to the funding, the News Challenge has played a great role in connecting us with other innovators and potential funders.

At the Knight News Challenge

I'm at the Knight News Challenge today on the campus of MIT. It's a conference and awards event for the winners of the Knight News Challenge Grant. DataDyne is a part of this, because we won last year for the DatAgro project in Chile, powered by our MIP technology. But I just want to put in a general plug for the Knight Foundation, and the News Challenge.

NY Times: Hyperlocal News

The NY Times details the efforts of websites like EveryBlock.com to bring local news and information together outside the context of a traditional newspaper -- something that dovetails nicely with our own own Mobile Information Project (MIP) .

Transmedia reports on DataDyne's DatAgro text messaging project in Chile

In this Spanish language piece from Chile, Transmedia describes how farmers in the Coopeumo cooperative will be receiving SMS messages sent using the MIP (Mobile Information Project) technology being developed by DataDyne as part of the DatAgro project, with the technology funded by Knight Foundation.

DataDyne wins Knight News Challenge Grant!

DataDyne has received a grant of $325,000 from the Knight Foundation as part of the Knight News Challenge, which sponsors "innovative ideas using digital experiments to transform community news."

DataDyne's project will create open-source software that enables anyone with a basic cellphone to receive SMS messages of news headlines from a variety of sources. In addition, users will be able to rate the headlines and stories they receive, and to subscribe to lists of the most-highly-rated stories.
